Nintendo Revolution details leaked

More details surface as to what's inside

NEWS: 30 March 2006 15:46 GMT by Stuart Miles

It seems you can't keep anything secret and so we find that the details of the inner workings of Nintendo's new console, the Revolution, have been leaked on the Internet via gaming site IGN months ahead of schedule.

According to the article:

"Insiders are saying that the new console will run on IBM's "Broadway" CPU and it will be clocked at 729MHz, according to updated Nintendo documentation. By comparison, GameCube's Gekko CPU ran at 485MHz. The original Xbox's CPU, admittedly a different architecture altogether, was clocked at 733MHz. Meanwhile, Xbox 360 runs three symmetrical cores at 3.2GHz."

It goes on to say that:

"The overall system memory numbers we reported last December have not greatly fluctuated, but new clarifications have surfaced. Revolution will operate using 24MBs of "main" 1T-SRAM. It will additionally boast 64MBs of "external" 1T-SRAM. That brings the total number of system RAM up to 88MBs, not including the 3MB texture buffer on the GPU. By comparison, GameCube featured 40MBs of RAM not counting the GPU's on-board 3MBs. The original Xbox included 64MBs total RAM. Xbox360 and PlayStation3 operate on 512MBs of RAM."

What does this all mean? Not much to be honest, system specs rarely tell the whole story, and in the end it all comes down to the coding and games themselves that will decide whether come Christmas gamers will be clambering around the Revolution, Xbox360 or the PS3.
