EA, number one for 2006

EA outperforms all rivals and then some

NEWS: 4 January 2007 11:20 GMT by Chris Ford

Little surprise for most people with even half an interest in the gaming world but Electronic Arts made the number one chart position its home during 2006.

Racking up a total of 27 weeks at number one the big turnover developers left rival publishers in the dust with the sheer volume of franchises such as FIFA.

FIFA 07, FIFA Street 2 and 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany together collected 17 weeks in the top position, while Need for Speed Carbon and its forerunner Need for Speed Most Wanted shared eight weeks at number one in 2006.

And it wasn’t just the tried and tested titles that pulled it in for EA, with new IP Black and The Godfather both managing a short stint at top spot.

THQ and Take 2 were next in line with six number ones each, with THQ showing the likes of Cars and Saints Row, and Take 2's Grand Theft Auto and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Other players included UK publisher Eidos with Tomb Raider: Legends and Hitman: Blood Money spent a collective five weeks at the top and Lucas Arts enjoyed some success with two for Lego Star Wars: The Original Trilogy.

Poor old Microsoft collected two number ones with Dead or Alive 4, and Gears of War. Single weeks were scored by Konami (Pro Evolution Soccer 6), Sega (Football Manager 2007), Capcom (Dead Rising) and Sony (Shadow of the Colossus).
