Boris Johnson vs. games industry, round 2

Publishers association strikes back inviting Tory MP to take a second look

NEWS: 9 January 2007 10:12 GMT by Chris Ford

ELSPA (Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association) director general Paul Jackson has invited Boris Johnson look at videogames more closely following the Tory MP's outburst against the industry.

Johnson, MP for Henley, attacked the use of videogames in an article in the Telegraph, arguing that they are the cause of falling literacy rates.

Jackson said he respects Johnson's views but suggested that the Johnson might be "painting his picture with too broad a brush".

"The games industry is often a scapegoat for many problems society encounters with youths. But instead of placing blame where it should not lie, we need to educate parents and carers of the 21st Century child", he continued.

Jackson went on to say that computer games can be "a great source of education in their own right", some providing "mental stimulation, memory and reaction improvement, entertainment and enjoyment in equal doses", and he even went so far as to suggest that some were educational as well using Civilisation and the Total War series as examples.
