Alienware soups up the ALX range with an Area-51 desktop

Quad-core power

NEWS: 18 January 2007 12:42 GMT by Amber Maitland

Alienware has expanded its ALX range of powerful gaming desktops with the Area-51 ALX, feature Intel Core 2 Extreme processors.

The desktop supposedly features “four times the speed and four times the power”, but of what is not clear – previous ALX desktops, perhaps.

Processor power goes up to 2.66GHz, with either Dual Core or Quad Core technology, and up to 4GB of system memory.

Graphics are powered by Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX SLI that provides up to 1.5GHz of GDDR3 memory on the world's first DirectX 10-compliand video card, while a Blu-ray drive can be incorporated to both play movies and burn discs for storage.

It comes standard with 250GB of hard disk space for storage, but can be expanded up to 750GB with four drives, while RAID options are also available.

The Area-51 ALX starts at £3254, which doesn't include the Blu-ray drive, which is an optional extra.
