Wii death competition DJs may be charged

Sheriff’s Department will be looking into comments made on air

NEWS: 22 January 2007 10:08 GMT by Chris Ford

After new information came to light regarding the death of a radio competition contestant, it looks like the DJs involved may face charges.

A 28-year-old woman, Jennifer Strange, died last week of water intoxication having taken part in a radio competition to win a Nintendo Wii. Contestants had to drink large amounts of water without going to the toilet. It has been estimated that Ms Strange drank about 7.5 litres/2 gallons.

County Sheriff, John McGinness, initially announced that there would be no investigation as the contestants had volunteered their participation. However, having reviewed transcripts of the radio show an investigation has been started.

In audio recordings, the DJs can be heard joking about water intoxication and referring to the death of a university student during hazing. They went on to crassly dismiss the concerns of a caller to the show who warned of the possible hazards of the contest by saying that contestants had “signed releases", and "so we’re not responsible”.

“We have decided we will open a death investigation which will take weeks and on conclusion our findings will be forwarded to the local district attorney to decide whether to lay criminal charges”, Announced Sgt. Timothy Curran.

For their part, the radio station, KDND 107.9, has sacked 10 staff members and opened their own investigation.
