What’s next from Blizzard?

Hints of new Diablo or Starcraft abound

NEWS: 24 January 2007 10:18 GMT by Chris Ford

With the latest World of Warcraft, The Burning Crusade, under their belts Blizzard is busy looking to the future to bring gamers more innovation in the land of massively multi-player online (MMO).

Last week, Blizzard Vice President of development, Itzik Ben Bassat, let it be known that something new in the way of Diablo or Starcraft may be on the way, though not without some confusion.

“We’d like to say to our fans of Diablo and Starcraft that we haven’t forgotten these franchises.”

So far, so good....

He went on to say that, “We cannot wait to be here in a few years, or however long it will be. It won’t be a decade, and we’ll be celebrating the launch of Starcraft together”.

Erm, so, does that mean a new Starcraft within 10 years from now, or within 10 years of the last launch in 1998. We here at Gamesdog certainly hope the latter.

Both the success of WoW, with 8 million subscribers, and Starcraft Ghost have led to speculation of an upcoming Starcraft MMO, and on top of it Blizzard hiring real-time strategy developers last summer has added fuel to the rumour fire.

Also doing the rumour rounds are tales of a World of Warcraft film, though Bassat said little of it apart from his liking the idea. We can only hope.
