Pope Benedict XVI has stepped into the current videogame nasties debate by slamming violent and sexually explicit games as "perversion" and "repulsive".

The Vatican head honcho’s attack came as part of an address for World Communications Day, the theme of which was "Children and the Media", where the Pontiff talked about the effect of violent games and films on minors.

"Any trend to produce programs and products, including animated films and videogames, which in the name of entertainment exalt violence and portray antisocial behaviour or the trivialisation of human sexuality is a perversion, all the more repulsive when these programs are directed at children and adolescents", the Pope said.

His comments have come after Gamesdog had reported a growing call for a unified European classification system.
