In the highly competitive battle for the hearts, minds and money of next-gen gamers, Sony have got their claws out for Nintendo’s Wii.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) spokesperson Dave Karraker started off by stating 100,000 PS3s are shipping each week in the US, and are selling out.

Karraker continued by setting his sights on the Wii and suggesting that Sony's console is much more powerful and should be considered as being in a different category.

"Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else", he said.

There is a continuing shortage of Wii units in the US while the PS3 is said to be readily available in many areas.

Sony suggests that the apparent demand for Nintendo's console is simply because the company is shipping less stock, but Nintendo of America’s vice president of marketing, Perrin Kaplan, has a differing view.

"That's absolutely inaccurate", she said, stating that Nintendo is shipping at least the same number of units as Sony.
