Slow PS3 sales are in the news again as figures released for the end of January in Japan show the Sony next-Gen console lagging behind both Nintendo’s Wii and the PS2.

More than 80,000 Wii units were sold in Japan between January 22 and 28, while Sony managed to shift 21,000 PS2s and only 20,000 PS3s.

To put things in perspective further, just 7000 Xbox 360s were shifted showing Microsoft’s continuing battle to find its place in the Japanese market.

Wii sales for the whole of January were 400,000 units, while only 150,000 PlayStation 3 consoles were sold.

Amid all this, Enterbrain's Hirokazu Hamamura has predicted a price cut for PS3.

According to Hamamura, president of Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, "There could be a price cut for PS3 by the end of the year".

He said he expected PS3 "to be doing better after a while", but added, "Of course, the Wii will keep running ahead".
