Quebec subsidies to fund Canadian project

NEWS: 12 February 2007 11:20 GMT by Chris Ford

Ubisoft is to receive funding from the Government of Quebec in order to estabish a new digital design studio and the expansion of the Montreal office.

In a statement released by Government officials, the publisher will get subsidies of up to CAN $19 million (US $16.2 million / EUR 12.5 million) in order to create jobs.

It is nothing new, however, the company having received money to open a game development "university" back in 2005.

The money will go towards a project which will open a digital design studio to "bring together film and videogames" and the expansion of Ubisoft Montreal.

The Francophone office already employs more than 1000 people, and the investment is expected to create a further 1000 jobs by 2013.

"For our Government, it is essential to support companies' training plans. By focusing on qualified labour, Quebec will be able to continue to create wealth and to come out on top in international competition", said Michelle Courchesne, Minister for Employment and Social Solidarity.
