Sony guarantees 1000 backwards compatible titles at PS3 launch

Sony's Phil Harrison seeks to reassure gamers

NEWS: 1 March 2007 10:16 GMT by Chris Ford

Phil Harrison, Sony's president of worldwide studios, has gone out of his way to assure gamers that the PS3 will support over 1000 PS2 titles at launch on March 23.

His comments come after a week of concern that followed news that the PS3 would only be able to play limited number of PS2 titles.

"The situation is changing everyday, but on March 23, we expect the list to include over 1000 PS2 titles", revealed Harrison.

With the PS2's emotion engine (the CPU) taken out of the European PS3, Sony is relying on in-built emulation to read PS2 titles on the console.

"We're working to introduce a resource to the Web to detail which titles will have backwards compatibility. And as we make firmware upgrades, we will be able to add to that list", said Harrison.
