A Goldman Sachs analyst has stuck his neck out on the line by predicting that Sony may lower costs of the PS3 by $100 worldwide as soon as this October.

Yuji Fujimora said that design simplification and cheaper chips could lead to the cuts for a console which some say is over-priced and will be necessary for Sony to do to maintain its position as market leader.

Fujimora talked about design simplification, using the PS2 as an example with its 2000 parts at launch cut to 600 parts in its latest form, and cheaper microprocessor chips.
