Elder Scrolls IV expansion bug under investigation

Bug causes games to be "rendered unplayable"

NEWS: 11 April 2007 10:10 GMT by Chris Ford

Bethesda Softworks has confirmed the existence of a major bug in PC version of their The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Shivering Isles expansion pack.

Official forums for the game’s fans are reporting that the glitch kicks in after 50-120 hours of play and that the game is there after "rendered unplayable".

The timing depends on the number of frames per second generated on a player’s PC but seems to occur because of the huge number of identification numbers for objects within the game.

The identification numbers for all the objects that a gamer sees are stored and once the stage space fills up then newly created objects simply disappear and the game can crash.

Whether the glitch exists in the Xbox 360 version is still unknown.

"We have verified this problem can happen on the PC and are still looking into whether it is possible on 360, since we don't have any reported cases of it happening on that platform, nor have we been able to recreate it on 360 ourselves", commented a Bethesda spokesperson.

"We're testing a fix for it right now and hope to have it out as soon as possible."
