No charge for Counter Strike/Team Fortress downloadable content

Valve wants to give fans extra content for free

NEWS: 23 May 2007 0:01 GMT by Chris Ford

It’s good news from Valve, unless you’re a share holder, as it has made it clear that the company doesn’t want to charge fans for extra downloadable content.

With games like Counter-Strike and Team Fortress 2 on its books, the idea of giving the content away for free bucks the trend of charging for every little extra.

Summing up the attitude, designer Robin Walker said, "You buy the product, you get the content. We make more money because more people buy it, not because we try and nickel-and-dime the same customers."

He was, perhaps, referring to the practice made popular by Microsoft on Xbox Live of “micro-transactions”, charging small amounts for extra content which obviously add up with the number of gamers buying.

"Our philosophy there is, if you buy the product, we put more content out to keep the game interesting, we sell more products," summed up Valve's marketing director Doug Lombardi

"Counter-Strike is number one and has been since '99 because we kept the game interesting, not because we tried to charge people more, and that's come back in sales of Counter-Strike," he added.
