New touch sensitive computer by Microsoft

New system is without keyboard and mouse

NEWS: 31 May 2007 0:01 GMT by Chris Ford

Always the innovators, Microsoft have announced that it is putting in the hours and investment for a touch sensitive computer system.

Microsoft's entertainment and devices division is in charge of the development and it is reminiscent of the table top style videogames of the early eighties.

With a 30 inch screen set into the top of the unit, it is designed to allow several people to use it at the same time.

It will initially be aimed at hotels and casinos rather than for home use, with a price tag of between $5,000 and $10,000, though Microsoft have plans to produce a cheaper version within three to five years.

A full line-up of features has yet to be released but Microsoft has stated that it will play a crucial role in the company's 'Connected Entertainment' strategy.

Microsoft E&D executive Tom Gibbons said, "Entertainment and devices has a long history of bringing innovative product experiences to market - such as Xbox, IPTV and Zune. Today, E&D’s vision is anchored in delivering end-to-end hardware, software and services across different pillars of Connected Entertainment, such as music, video, communication and gaming."

"That’s exactly what we’re doing with Microsoft Surface. The new hardware and software in Surface, along with a predominant focus on the consumer experience, support the Connected Entertainment vision - making entertainment more personal, more interactive and more social."
