Online Darfur Is Dying game to be translated

Student developed game to reach out across MTV

NEWS: 12 June 2007 0:00 GMT by Chris Ford

In order to highlight the fate of the Sudanese in the province of Darfur who are suffering at the hands of militias in the country’s ongoing civil war, MTV will translate an online game into Chinese, Arabic and Spanish to further the cause.

The game, which has already been played 2.5 million times, was launched a year ago at the Save Darfur: Rally to Stop Genocide. The conflict has seen over 400,000 killed and over 2.5 million displaced.

MTV is hoping to promote the game, developed by students at the University of Southern California, and the cause in over 128 countries with its translations reaching 370 million households.

“College students helped establish the crisis in Darfur as a front-burner issue for governments worldwide, and as the genocide continues unabated, we felt a responsibility to offer up this student-developed game as a resource for a much larger global audience,” said Stephen Friedman, GM, mtvU.

“Darfur is Dying has already touched more than a million people and we’re proud to join with MTV channels everywhere to continue spreading the game’s message of awareness and action.”
