Blu-ray finds Blockbuster preference over HD-DVD

The battle of the formats continues to bubble

NEWS: 18 June 2007 10:03 GMT by Chris Ford

In the latest twist of the DVD format wars, rental giant Blockbuster has announced that it will be taking Blu-ray’s side.

The company said that in the U.S it will be stocking Blu-ray films in all its 1700 stores whereas HD-DVD discs will only be available at 250 outlets.

The decision came after Blockbuster’s own findings that Blu-ray rentals were way higher than those of HD-DVD.

"We intend to meet the demands of our customers and based on the trends we are seeing, we're expanding our Blu-ray inventory to ensure our stores reflect the right level of products," said Matthew Smith, SVP of merchandising at Blockbuster.

"While it is still too early to say which high-definition format will become the industry standard, we will continue to closely monitor customer rental patterns both at our stores and online, so we can adjust our inventory mix accordingly and ensure that Blockbuster is offering customers the most convenient access to the movies they want, in the format they want," Smith continued.
