Blu-ray Digital Right Management BD+ ready

Protection system may swing the format war

NEWS: 21 June 2007 14:17 GMT by Chris Ford

Sony and Blu-ray have announced that the system has perfected the BD+ Digital Right Management (DRM) system, adding another layer of protection to the format.

BD+ will give protection above the AACS encryption which has already been broken.

The system is considered the strongest available extending to temporarily disabling hardware features like Managed-Copy.

It remains to be seen what the effect of the new system will be but it was Toshiba’s refusal to install a similar system in the HD-DVD which persuaded Fox to go with Blu-ray and it may well cause other studios to do the same.
