It seems that every other week another business or organisation takes up residency in Second Life, but now the Vancouver Police have become the first law enforcement presence in the virtual world.

Vancouver PD decided on opening a station in Second Life in order to attract a new type of recruit to its ranks – tech heads.

Head of the tech crimes division at Vancouver PD, Kevin McQuiggin, wanted to set up a virtual department after hearing a seminar in Second Life.

"It's to get recruits. I just need smart, tech-savvy people... As we move into the future, we're going to need people who understand technology--that are conversant with it, that understand the impact of it and understand how to use it," McQuiggin said.
