Sony has announced what many believe to be amazing news, if only for how soon it has come - sales of the PS3 have doubled in the U.S following the drop in price.

It’s been barely a week sine the price was cut in North America by $100 but Sony America boss Jack Tretton announced the good news that sales have rocketed with the U.S’ leading retail outfits.

"Since Monday, sales of the 60GB PS3 have doubled at our top five retailers," Tretton reported at Sony's E3 conference.

With the renewed sales the company now wishes to ship at least 11 million consoles by the end of this year. It also hopes to prove the doubters wrong, such as Square Enix president John Yamamoto who told GamesIndustry.biz, "I think $500 for PS3 is still a bit expensive for most gamers."
