PS3 put through independent stress test

Endurance and extremes of heat and cold … the PS3 survived them all

NEWS: 16 August 2007 0:00 GMT by Chris Ford

Sony has been polishing its buttons in pride at noting the results of an independent stress test carried out on one of its PS3 consoles.

The test was carried out by PS3 Vault and it put a console through the wringers like an airforce test pilot.

The first task was 108 hours of continuous play, using a mixture of Blu-ray films and games. The only sign of problems was some vibration “coming from the tray area”. These lasted for about 20 seconds.

Next, it was off to the back of a freezer van where the console started at a temperature of 50 Fahrenheit/10 Celsius and went down to 0F/-18C, which was maintained for the last 24 hours of the 4-day test. A “slight sluggishness in playback once the temperature reached 0 degrees”, was noted, and a blackout was found to be due to condensation on the screen cord.

Finally, the PS3 found its way into a sauna for another 4 day stint, starting at 100 F/38 C and reaching 120 F/49 C for the last 25 hours. Apart from a burning smell at 110F at the 64 hour mark, there were no problems.

Apart from all those conditions, and playing games and films throughout, the console is now said to be in more agreeable circumstances and operating without any hitches.
