Videogames exonerated in Virginia Tech shootings report

Violent games were not the problem, the report concludes

NEWS: 31 August 2007 10:19 GMT by Chris Ford

In a rare case of violent videogames being let off the hook for all of society’s ills, the official report into the Virginia Tech shootings concluded that the virtual world played no part.

The report, made by the Virginia governor's office, said that the shooter, Seung Hui Cho, had only played titles such as Sonic in his childhood. "None of the videogames were war games or had violent themes," the report asserts.

In addition, roommates had never seen Cho playing games at the university.

Much of the media, and, of course, the industry’s old adversary Jack Thompson had blamed violent games in the weeks after the tragedy.

Linking one incident with others Thompson was quoted as saying, "What the FBI and Secret Service found after Columbine after looking at all the school shooting up to then was the common denominator of the perpetrators being immersed in incredibly violent entertainment, most notably violent video games."

"To have been able to pull this off, with the high body count, one has to have been able to have rehearsed it, and I think that's unfortunately what will be found to be the case."
