Sony has been celebrating he fact that at last its PS3 has been showing promising sales with the introduction of the new 40GB model.

Following the launch on new SKUs hardware sales have gone up 178% in the last week bringing home the third most successful week since the UK launch of the console.

However, the PS3 still has a long way to go as the figures for the same period still show the DS way out in front, followed by the Wii. The PS3 came in third with the 360 trailing.

In conjunction with the new £299 40GB PS3, the 60GB model was reduced to £349, bundled with two games.

Software sales have followed the boost in hardware with titles such as Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm climbing back up the charts, and new games like Heavenly Sword re-entering the top 40.
