Controller controversy for Sony and Nintendo

Legal challenge over Wi-Fi tech launched

NEWS: 14 January 2008 10:15 GMT by Katie Scott

A patent infringement case in the US is set to embroil both Sony and Nintendo.

An American company, Copper Innovations Group, has served both the gaming giants with lawsuits alleging that their controllers infringe patented wireless technologies.

The suit has been filed with the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Copper Innovations Group claims that that the method by which the controllers are connected to and recognised by the consoles is allegedly copied from its patents.

The patent in question covers 'Hand Held Computer Input Apparatus and Method' and was filed back in 1996.

According to online reports, this details the manner of connectivity, and the way controllers are identified using a numerical system linked to transmissions.

Microsoft has not been named in the suit as yet.

Copper Innovations Group is seeking damages, legal fees and a halt to sales.
