Age of Conan breaks pre-order record for PC games

And the limited edition sells out already

NEWS: 19 May 2008 18:49 GMT by Verity Burns

Funcom has announced that the Collector's Edition of Age of Conan is now completely sold out in all markets, and believes it has smashed the record for pre-order of a PC game.

Despite the fact that the game isn't released until 23 May (20 May in America), the exclusive edition has already sold out, even after additional boxes were made. The total print run now stands at 111,000 copies, and that's the lot.

As for the standard edition, 700,000 copies are shipping on day one, thanks to equally impressive pre-order numbers. So impressive in fact, Funcom been unable to fulfill all orders in several markets due to server capacity limitations. They've since ordered in extra servers so they are able to handle more customers.

“Everyone in Funcom is delighted and humbled with the historical pre-order numbers for Age of Conan. If the information we have is correct, they represent the highest pre-order number for any global launch of an original PC game, ever, including the original World of Warcraft launch”, said Morten Larssen, Funcom’s VP of sales & marketing.

More than one million unique visitors visited the Age of Conan websites last week, and as a result of the great interest in the game, Funcom's early access offer was swiftly oversubscribed. The three day early access program was a limited offer reserved for pre-order customers. While Funcom scaled the servers above anticipation, player demand surpassed expectations.

With the game launching fully next week, let's hope the new servers can hold up the high demand.
