Ubisoft plans 3D games, films, books and more

Guillemot wants to do it all

NEWS: 2 June 2008 11:39 GMT by Verity Burns

Ubisoft will be making a move into 3D games, as well as CGI films, books and a TV series in the future, says CEO Yves Guillemot.

A movie tie-in, Avatar, will be its first venture into the world of 3D, but you will need a special TV to broadcast the image - these are apparently already for sales in the US.

"The deal is to build a 3D experience on top of the normal experience. Avatar will have both. It's with glasses on a specific TV. I've seen it, it's amazing," said Guillemot.

The idea eventually is to produce games in both 2D and 3D in order to reach as wide an audience as possible.

This ambitious move ties in with Guillemot's goal to create CGI films. He says his aim is to reach a similar level to Peter Jackson's Weta studio, which made headlines for itself after its work on the Lord of the Rings films.

This arm to the business is planned to be handled externally at first, but then moved closer in to allow Ubisoft games to benefit from the art and animation skills.

Among other things, Guillemot also confirmed that Ubisoft are developing both books and a "small TV series", but was reluctant to discuss subject matter.
