Capcom denies Resident Evil 5 racist allegations

Says the game has not been changed

NEWS: 4 June 2008 16:46 GMT by Verity Burns

The producer of Resident Evil 5 has denied reports that the game has been toned down following allegations of racism.

A trailer of the game released by Capcom was slammed by Newsweek writer N'Gai Croal after he noted it only featured black zombies.

He said:: "There was a lot of imagery in that trailer that dovetailed with classic racist imagery."

Since then, Resident Evil 5's producer Jun Takeuchi has denied that the title has been redesigned in response to Croal's comments.

In a recent interview, when asked if the game had been changed, he simply said: "No, not really", adding that the racist criticism "didn't have any effect on the game design".

Takeuchi added: "We're in the business of entertainment... We didn't set out to make a racist game or a political statement. We did feel there was a misunderstanding about the initial trailer."

Resident Evil 5 is set to be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year.
