Nintendo's Wii is still the top selling console in Japan, but the latest stats would suggest that it's losing its lead.

Please not that this was an article from November 2007. Yes, remember those "PS3 Gaining on Wii" headlines back then? Remember how the Wii again opened up the gap shortly afterwards. Remember that gaining ground means that the distance between two contenders is shrinking? So selling 1.7 times more than the other means that you are gaining ground. Selling 1 more than the other means that you are still gaining ground and could forever continue to sell only one more and still continue to gain ground. If the Wii and PS3 tied from here on, the PS3 would not gain any ground.
Media - please learn to do more professional reporting and more accurate headlines. Then again, maybe not...it is entertaining.
