Wii becomes best-selling console in America

June figures push it to lifetime sales of 10.9m

NEWS: 18 July 2008 16:38 GMT by Verity Burns

Nintendo has taken the lead to become the best-selling current generation console in the US. And it isn't ashamed to boast about it.

June sales of 666,700 units took its lifetime total to nearly 10.9 million, according to NPD data, which pushed it in front of previous leader, Xbox 360.

"As we have demonstrated this week during the E3 Media & Business Summit, Wii continues to pioneer new ways for people to interact with their video games and with one another," said Nintendo marketeer Cammie Dunaway.

And it was a double whammy for Nintendo, as the DS actually led the overall pack in June with 783.500 units sold. The Wii was next, followed by the PS3 with 405,500 units.

Sony's figure was no doubt boosted by the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, which led the charts for most of June.

"The PlayStation brand is truly hitting its stride on its long-term opportunity across all three platforms. Our strong June numbers serve as proof to the continued momentum of the PS3 and affirms that we're exactly where we expected to be," said Sony's Jack Tretton.

As for the rest of the chart, the PSP was next with 337,400 units sold, while Xbox 360 was way behind with just 219,800 units sold throughout June.

The PS2 rounded out the list with 188,798 units sold, not bad for its eighth year on the market, taking its lifetime US sales total to over 42.4 million consoles.

Have Your Say
  • It looks to me like the Wii is selling hype.We bought ours a year ago and got about a month of play out of it.Played all 4 good games and a few classics, surfed the web for a couple hours....it is a dust collecter.
At the very least a dvd drive would have made it somewhat useable.
On the other hand i don't have enough time in the day to play the backlog of 360 games that have been released not to mention the ones that will be.
Quality games with really good replay value. Not to mention downloaded movies, streaming movies from my pc,audio and soon netflix. If iptv ever comes to light my 360 will be our complete entertainment system.it's a release model thats still going strong with daily play.
I can't see the wii every coming close to replacing it.
Wii bought the hype and there it sits like a small white stonehenge that no one can figure out what it for...maybe wii fit will give it some use but i am not holding my breath.
    will, usa
