More to retro fun to come from handheld Mega Drive firm

Already has "other products in development" after Mega Drive success

NEWS: 6 August 2008 15:39 GMT by Verity Burns

Blaze, the company behind the handheld Mega Drive, has said it is set to release more devices into its popular retro range.

The portable Mega Drive from the company features 20 built-in games, including classics like Golden Axe, Alex Kidd and Echo the Dolphin. So far the device has seen great sales, and Blaze are hoping it will continue to perform in the run-up to Christmas.

"The response from consumers and retailers alike has been great and interest is very high," said Blaze's marketing manager James Gill.

"We hope to gain traction in the market with these products in the run-up to Christmas, and we already have other products in development that will also be released and will continue the retro theme."

The retro scene has made a comeback recently, particularly shown by the success of Wii's Virtual Console and the classic titles selling well on Xbox Live Arcade.

"We think the market for retro games is growing and has been strengthened by the support for classics on Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 digital platforms, Gill continued.

"Everybody loves reliving their youth, which makes these retro devices appealing to those old enough to have played the games first time round. They appeal to younger gamers too, who are keen to find out what these old classics are all about."

No news on what the new devices are, but we're keeping our fingers crossed for a handheld SNES. We'll update you with any news we get.
