Barack Obama gets "voted in" by Xbox gamers

Wins 43% of vote in Live mock election

NEWS: 25 September 2008 8:47 GMT by Verity Burns

A mock election held on Xbox Live has seen gamers vote in Democratic candidate Barack Obama, who won a landslide victory.

Nearly 100,000 gamers in North America logged on to Xbox Live "vote" for their preferred candidate, where they could also register themselves to vote in the real thing.

Video coverage of the recent Democratic and Republican conventions was also available for download, which 25,000 opted to do.

The experiment, which has been running since August 25th in partnership with activist group Rock the Vote, saw Obama win 43% of gamers' votes, while Republican rival John McCain scored 31%.

The number logging on to place their vote is a bigger sample than many of the recent polls combined - including big news corporations such as CNN and NBC.
